Guelph police say they will join several police services across the province by holding a gun amnesty program during the month of April.
Beginning Apr. 1, any Ontario resident can voluntarily surrender unwanted or illegally owned firearms, weapons, accessories or ammunition.
“Through this program, we can promote community safety by preventing firearms from ending up in the wrong hands,” said Guelph police Chief Jeff DeRuyter.
The program is in collaboration with Ontario Provincial Police and other municipal police services, including London and Orangeville.
During the program, police will not recommend weapon-related charges that might otherwise apply to people who are turning in these items.
But police said amnesty will not be offered for people who turn in weapons that have been used in the commission of a crime and no anonymous submissions will be accepted.
Those who are interested can call Guelph police at 519-824-1212 to arrange for officers to attend and safely retrieve the weapons.
Police are urging gun owners not to deliver guns or ammunition directly to police stations.
