Operator injured after backhoe tips over in Lachine

A man in his thirties was seriously injured when the backhoe he was operating tipped over in Lachine late Monday.

The incident happened around 11:45 p.m. at a Cegerco project that is clearing concrete debris at a Parks Canada site along the Lachine Canal.

The shovel on the backhoe was improperly installed. That caused a balance issue and resulted in the machinery tipping over.

“Work operations have been suspended at the site,” said Julie Robitaille, Quebec’s health and safety board (CNESST) spokesperson.

“[We] set a couple of conditions before work can resume, the re-positioning of the equipment and for a safer method of work by the company.”

CNESST says that the man, a foreman at the site, was transported to hospital in serious condition but doctors do not fear for his life.
