SALABERRY-DE-VALLYFIELD – A serious mould problem has forced the closing of Gault Institute elementary school in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield.
Parents of almost 200 children had to rearrange their schedules Monday to care for their kids.
The president of the New Frontiers’ School Board says the principal first noticed problems of mould almost three weeks ago in her office as well as that of the school’s secretary.
They both started coughing and some students even suffered from headaches and nausea after the mould had spread to some of the classrooms.
All of the mould has been removed by construction workers but public health officials still have to conduct air quality tests before determining if the school can be reopened.
Meanwhile, the school board is working with town officials to try and relocate the students.
Michel Joly of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield says some classes my be transferred into a local convent since the school board doesn’t have any other schools in the area.
There will be an information session for parents on Monday night with school and public health officials at Chateauguay Valley Regional H.S. at 7 PM.
