University of Guelph gets $25M from province to reduce carbon footprint

The University of Guelph has received $25 million from the provincial government to help the campus cut back on greenhouse gas emissions.

The funding, which was announced Friday, will go towards upgrading and expanding the university’s heat recovery system, installing energy monitoring meters and a new electric boiler.

The provincial money includes $9.5 million in grants and $16.8 million in interest-free loans.

“Our goal is preserving natural resources, cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs, and helping protect the environment,” said U of G vice-president Don O’Leary in a news release.

Buildings to be upgraded include the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre and Rozanski Hall.

The university said the projects will reduce CO2 emission by more than 3,200 tons per year.
