The Middlesex London Health Unit (MLHU) has a special board meeting Wednesday morning as a potential move downtown hits another roadblock.

During their council meeting Tuesday night, Middlesex county politicians chose not to approve the move and then voted to call in a provincial assessor to strike down a proposed move by the health unit.

Officials have been looking at moving the health unit to a new downtown London location, but county politicians want the new site to better cater to those living in Middlesex.

How the health unit will respond might become clearer this morning at a special board meeting that was scheduled earlier in the week. Their move has already been approved by London city council.

In 2015, Middlesex County informed MLHU of its intention to redevelop the site at 50 King St., which is viewed as a valuable piece of riverfront property.

That got the health unit looking for a permanent site, and they’ve been hunting for a long-term home since 2016. Staff is currently split between their King Street location and a secondary office at 201 Queens Ave.

After receiving 19 expressions of interest and nine full proposals for a new home, the health unit has narrowed those options down to one. They have previously said they won’t release details until a final proposal is worked out.

The current lease at the health unit’s King Street site allows either side to end it with one year’s notice, but county officials have said the health unit can stay as long as it wants.
