Edmontonians march for rights ahead of International Women’s Day

Edmontonians marched down Whyte Avenue through the snow Saturday in support of women’s rights.

Dozens marched from the University of Alberta to the Old Strathcona Performing Arts Centre.

The event was held to raise awareness about issues affecting women such as violence against women, human and sex trafficking and childcare.

“We may have the vote, but there is a lot of ways that women feel they do not have control over the forces impacting their own lives,” organizer Merryn Edwards said.

“We still have a long ways to go before we can feel that our society is one that is meeting our own needs and listening to our voices. ”

The event was organized by Women 4 Rights and Empowerment.

The march came a few days before International Women’s Day, which is held on March 8.
