A Crown prosecutor says he hopes a conviction in the murder of an Inuk woman will serve as some reassurance to the Indigenous community.

A jury in Montreal Wednesday found 32-year-old Kwasi Benjamin guilty in the 2015 death of his girlfriend, 29-year-old Nellie Angutiguluk.

Crown attorney Dennis Galiatsatos argued during the trial that Benjamin strangled the mother of three following an argument.

Following the verdict, Galiatsatos said he hopes the case will serve to tell Aboriginal people that the justice system has not forgotten them.

He was referring to two separate verdicts in February where the accused were acquitted in the deaths of Indigenous people.

In Saskatchewan, Gerald Stanley was found not guilty of shooting Colten Boushie, while jurors in Winnipeg found Raymond Cormier not guilty of murdering Tina Fontaine.
