Calgary police declare 2014 suspicious death a homicide, search for more information

Calgary police have declared the 2014 death of a man found frozen in a northeast parking lot on Madigan Drive N.E. a homicide and are now looking for a person who may have information related to the case.

A passerby discovered the body of 41-year-old Douglas Miller, who appeared to be frozen, near a parking lot in the 5900 block of Madigan Drive N.E. at about 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014.

Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta said Monday that investigators have information that Miller left his home at 8 p.m. the night before his body was found. It’s believed he died sometime that night.

At the time, police said it was unclear whether the death was a homicide.

Investigators said an autopsy report released months later confirmed the death was suspicious.

Over the years, officers explored several investigative leads. New information has recently come to light that leads police to believe the 2014 death was a homicide.

“We do know that the CCTV footage that we have released now to the media is of relevance to this file, and it’s very important that we identify he or she within that photo,” Schiavetta said, adding the surveillance footage was captured in the area where Miller’s body was found.

Schiavetta said investigators have been in contact with Miller’s family throughout the entire investigation, adding they are “looking for closure and resolution to this.”

Investigators are not releasing the cause of death in order to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation, which has been classified as “active” since 2014. Schiavetta said police currently don’t have any suspects or persons of interest in the case.

Investigators released a surveillance photo Wednesday and are now looking for a person they believe may have information about the case. They did not provide a description of the person.
