Driver rescued from Port Bruce bridge collapse

Emergency crews were on scene at the Imperial Road bridge following its collapse Friday afternoon – Feb 23, 2018

A 27-year-old man was rescued without injury from Friday’s Port Bruce bridge collapse.

Elgin County OPP responded to the Imperial Road bridge following its collapse Friday afternoon.

Police say a dump truck was was travelling north on Highway 73 across the bridge when it collapsed. The main portion of the bridge fell into the Catfish Creek waterway while the northern portion of the bridge remained attached to a concrete pillar.

According to police, the driver of the dump truck was stranded as the truck remained stuck in an upright position.

Fire services were able to rescue the 27-year-old Thorndale, Ont. man using a watercraft. The driver was not injured in the collapse.

Police are asking people to use Dexter Line to gain access to Port Bruce, as Highway 73 remains closed.

Authorities have yet to determine a cause for the collapse.
