Saskatchewan government to continue long-term care home survey

The Saskatchewan government is looking for more input from residents and their families on how long-term care homes are performing.

The first resident and family experience survey took place in 2017.

Over 2,700 residents responded, with 88 per cent living in the facilities saying they were generally satisfied with their long-term care home.

Of the 2,400 family members who completed a survey, 83 per cent expressed their satisfaction.

Saskatchewan Health Minister Jim Reiter said the ongoing surveys will complement the yearly CEO tours of the facilities.

“Since the launch of the CEO tours in 2013, we’ve learned a lot, which has helped us to make improvements to benefit residents,” Reiter said in a press release.

“The resident and family experience surveys give us the opportunity to harness a greater degree of feedback from residents and their families.”

The two biggest complaints received in the 2017 CEO tour were low staffing levels and the lack of baths.

Health officials said they look at any concerns raised as an opportunity for improvement and the results are shared with the Saskatchewan Health Authority to address specific concerns.

The survey will take place every two years starting in the 2018-19 fiscal year.
