Students at Calgary’s Catholic high schools will be able to graduate with their Grade 12 diploma along with a certificate as a pharmacy assistant.
The first 20 Grade 11 students to enroll in the program began taking twice-weekly pharmacy assistant classes at the beginning of February.
The students will continue to take classes until graduation in the spring of next year.

“This is a new way of learning that will open up some exciting doors for Calgary high school students,” says Dr. Gordon Nixon, Vice President Academic at SAIT. “This flexible and creative learning option is exactly what SAIT stands for and we hope to offer even more program areas to high school students in the future.”
The Calgary Catholic School District says it’s a win-win for students.
“Our students are going to have the opportunity to receive post-secondary credits and head right into the work-force upon completion of high school,” says Chief Superintendent Gary Strother.
SAIT says pharmacy assistants are in high demand not only at pharmacies but at hospitals and long-term care facilities across the province.
Pharmacy assistants process prescriptions, perform clerical and computer duties and manage inventory.
