Lynx sighting in Banff National Park

BANFF- Two elusive creatures have been caught on tape, after getting stuck on the highway near Lake Louise.

On January 31, human-wildlife conflict specialist Alex Taylor was called by alert motorists to help a lynx and her kitten off of the busy Trans-Canada Highway.

While intervening, he managed to capture some footage of the beautiful animals as they crossed back through the highway fencing.

“As the pictures clearly portray, lynx are incredibly agile and flexible animals – this sequence is nothing short of stunning,” said Omar McDadi, a Parks Canada Communications Officer, in a statement. “We believe this is the first time lynx have been captured on film crossing highway fencing in this fashion.”

Lynx sightings in the park are rare, as are incidents of the animals crossing through the highway fences. Since they were installed in 1996, wildlife overpasses and fencing have helped reduce collisions between vehicles and animals by 80 per cent.
