Saskatchewan labour leaders want province to slow down on labour law changes

REGINA – Labour leaders who were on a government advisory committee on new labour laws are asking the province to slow down on making changes.

They say the proposed Saskatchewan Employment Act will “re-set” employment in ways the committee would not have predicted.

The leaders say there should be a fuller review on the intent of the changes and whether there could be unintended consequences.

Committee member Hugh Wagner says there are many concerns and a lot of questions, especially about labour standards and bargaining rules.

The proposed act, which melds dozens of labour laws into one piece of legislation, was introduced Dec. 5.

It could become law as soon as this spring if it is passed in the legislature.
