Nolan Barnes is urging people to get home safe after an impaired driving crash in 2010 left him paralyzed and a close friend dead.
“I honestly, thought it was pretty selfish,” Barnes said on Monday.
“I really thought it was just me and whatever decisions I made affected me. I remember in that hospital room with all my friends and family around, it impacted way more people than just me.”
Saskatoon Transit and Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) are once again offering a way for people to get to and from New Year’s Eve celebrations with free bus rides in the city.
“Ding in the New Year” begins at 8 p.m. CT on Dec. 31 and will run until about 2:45 a.m., with times varying slightly by route.
Riders can wait at a regular stop or flag down a bus.
“We strongly encourage residents to jump on the bus and let us take you to and from your destination,” Saskatoon Transit director Jim McDonald said in a press release.
“When flagging a bus, use caution, stand on the curb at a safe place for the bus to stop and raise your hand to get the operators attention.”
Saskatoon Transit and SGI have partnered to offer free transit on New Year’s Eve since 1989.
