It was a busy year for the North Shore Search and Rescue team, with 123 calls so far.
Team leader Mike Danks says that number is becoming the new norm.
“Around 2014 that number like really jumped, we averaged around 90 to 100 calls, and then in 2015 we actually had 139 calls. So it’s gone up dramatically since that time.”
Danks said the team now averages 130 calls every year, adding that other search and rescue teams across B.C. have also seen an increase.

Population growth and tourism have played a role in the spike, Danks explained, while also noting that social media has also played a role, with more people wanting to snap the perfect picture outdoors.
“I think the big thing for all the search and rescue teams is we’re doing our best to really promote enjoying the backcountry safely.”
As the year comes to an end, Danks said people wanting to watch the sunrise outdoors to welcome the New Year need to plan ahead and be prepared.
