A standoff that lasted several hours involving a man with a gun in an industrial area of Sherwood Park ended safely Tuesday afternoon.
The RCMP responded to a weapons complaint at around 2:00 a.m. Tuesday at a business between 18 Street and 24 Street at 84 Avenue in Strathcona County.
Police said they received information that a man had pointed a gun at a woman who left immediately and contacted police.
“The male is believed to be associated to the business here in Sherwood Park and at that point, the female fled the scene and contacted police,” RCMP Const. Chantelle Kelly said.
Kelley said officers arrived on scene and saw a vehicle speeding away from the business.
“Police believe, at that point, that the suspect could be in the vehicle.”
Mounties followed the vehicle and spoke to the driver, eventually determining that, while he was in the building at the time, he was not involved in the incident.
Kelly said the RCMP returned to the business and set up a barricade because the man involved in the incident had produced a handgun. The suspect is known to police, Kelly said.
At about 10 a.m., a woman was seen walking out of the building. Police brought her behind a large tactical vehicle and placed her in handcuffs.
Around noon, the suspect was safely arrested. He was seen on the ground being searched, before being taken away to a police vehicle by a team of officers in tactical gear.
The RCMP is continuing to investigate the incident.
