Hamilton police say 1 man arrested, 2nd identified following fatal shooting

Police have arrested a man and are searching for a second suspect in connection with the shooting death of a good Samaritan in downtown Hamilton on Saturday night.

Investigators say they were able to identify the suspects “thanks to assistance from the public.”

James Anthony Robert Matheson, a 20-year-old Hamilton man, was arrested and charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder after police said he was located early Monday morning at a home in the city core.

Police said they’re looking for 19-year-old Dale Burningsky King who is wanted for second-degree murder.

The pair are accused in the shooting death of of 19-year-old Yosif Al-Hasnawi of Hamilton.

Al-Hasnawi, a Brock University medical sciences student and aspiring doctor, was shot and killed while trying to intervene when he spotted two men accosting another man at about 9 p.m. Saturday near Main and Wentworth Streets.

The university put out a statement saying staff have contacted Al-Hasnawi’s family to offer support.

“The Brock community is in shock and deep mourning after the tragic death of 19-year-old Yosif Al-Hasnawi, who died in a shooting incident in Hamilton on the weekend after trying to help someone being accosted on the street,” the university said.
