Thousands attend Vancouver Remembrance Day ceremony at Victory Square

A large crowd gathered in Vancouver on Saturday for the annual Remembrance Day ceremony at Victory Square.

Despite the threat of rain, thousands of people packed the square and surrounding streets to take in the service.

Applause echoed as veterans marched into the square. All First World War veterans have passed and the average age of survivors of the Second World War is 93.

The ceremony began at 10 a.m. with a performance by the Vancouver Bach Youth Choir and Sarabande. At 11 a.m., the Last Post was sounded, followed by two minutes of silence, during which a 21-gun salute was heard from Portside Park.

Remembrance Day: No stone left alone

In Victoria, a large crowd assembled on the grounds of the legislature under grey skies. Lieutenant-Governor Judith Guichon and Deputy Premier Carole James were among those in attendance. Premier John Horgan attended a ceremony in Langford.

Other ceremonies took place across the province, including at North Vancouver’s cenotaph in Victoria Park and Thunderbird Memorial Square in Abbotsford.
