63-year-old man dies in Guelph crash while riding motorized wheelchair

Guelph police are investigating a fatal crash after a 63-year-old man was struck and killed while riding a motorized wheelchair Thursday evening.

Emergency crews were called to the area of Gordon Street South and Poppy Drive at around 6 p.m. and transported the man to hospital in critical condition.

Police said he died of his injuries at around 7 p.m.

Investigators believe the man was riding his motorized wheelchair northbound in the southbound curb lane of Gordon Street when he collided with a 2005 Ford Taurus that was travelling southbound.

The 45-year-old driver of Taurus, from Burlington, did not suffer any injuries.

Gordon Street was closed between Clair and Maltby Roads for about five hours but has now reopened to traffic.

A police spokesperson said it’s not known if any charges will be laid or if the weather played a factor in the collision.

Officers are looking for witnesses to the collision or anyone who saw the victim on the motorized wheelchair prior to the crash.
