Fire at K2 mine leaves hundreds waiting underground

ESTERHAZY – More than 300 employees at Mosaic’s K2 potash mine near Esterhazy are waiting to return to the surface after a fire broke out Monday morning.

The fire was reported at 10:35 a.m. and has since been extinguished, but employees will remain in the mine until air quality checks can be completed.

No injuries have been reported and all 318 employees have been accounted for. It is expected all will brought out by 9:00 p.m. Monday night.

There is no word on the cause of the fire, although a Mosaic spokesperson says it appears a piece of equipment was involved in the fire.

The incident is under investigation.
