Calgary school evacuated in frigid temperatures and -16 wind chill

A southeast Calgary school was evacuated Monday afternoon due to a potential gas leak nearby.

Construction is underway near Colonel Walker School at 19 Street and 9 Avenue S.E., and officials confirm a gas line may have been damaged by heavy equipment.

The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) said the evacuation coincided with the end of the school day for the students at Colonel Walker.

According to the CFD a perimeter was set up around the school to keep people away.

Carol Henke with the Calgary Fire Department said the school staff was allowed to go back in to the school after ATCO clamped the line at 3:15 p.m..

As of 6:15 p.m. the fire department had left the scene.

Henke said there were no reports of injuries.

The Colonel Walker website says there are 114 students from kindergarten to grade 6 enrolled at the school.
