Before she was found dead in June 2016, Cynthia Crampton allowed her alleged killer and his girlfriend to stay at her home in Saskatoon, according to a Crown prosecutor.
The first-degree murder trial for Tyler Hurd, 35, began with Crown prosecutor Sheryl Fillo telling a jury they will hear “chilling details” over the course of the proceedings.
A graphic video played in court showed Crampton, 55, face down on the bathroom floor in her one-bedroom basement apartment, surrounded by towels and blood.
One of Crampton’s daughters found her mother dead, court heard.
The victim previously allowed Hurd and his girlfriend, Tammy Poffley, to stay with her in the suite when they were homeless, according to Fillo.
Poffley pleaded guilty in July to being an accessory to murder and was sentenced to two years less a day in prison.
The Crown argued Hurd planned out the attack and waited until Crampton received her paycheque before carrying out the murder, so he could financially benefit from her death.
Video showed numerous pieces of furniture and empty jewelry boxes strewn about Crampton’s bedroom.
Hurd and Poffley were arrested two days after Crampton’s body was discovered. Both were spotted about 35 kilometres west of Saskatoon in Asquith, Sask.
The trial is scheduled to last two weeks in the Court of Queen’s Bench in Saskatoon.
