Man dies after armed assault in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve

A 39-year-old man died in hospital overnight after he was found injured in Montreal’s Hochelega-Maisonneuve borough on Friday night.

Montreal police (SPVM) said they received a 911 call at 10:30 p.m. concerning a man lying on the ground near the intersection of Jeanne-d’Arc Avenue and Ste-Catherine Street East.

When officers arrived at the scene, they located the victim who was seriously injured.

“He had important injuries to the upper body, possibly made with a sharp object,” SPVM spokesperson Manuel Couture said.

The man was rushed to hospital in critical condition and later died of his injuries.

It is the city’s 19th homicide of 2017.

Couture confirmed the victim is known to police and said they believe the homicide is drug-related.

Investigators with the major crimes unit were at the scene early Saturday morning gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.

Last week, another man was stabbed just four blocks west of Jeanne-d’Arc Avenue, at the intersection of Ste-Catherine Street East and Valois Avenue. Police said the incidents are not related.
