Rick Zamperin: Colin Kaepernick’s new book should be called ‘Blackballed’

He’s no longer earning a hearty paycheque playing football.

But Colin Kaepernick is still cashing in.

The former San Francisco 49’ers quarterback turned social justice crusader has agreed to a $1 million book deal with Random House.

No word yet on a title, but I think Blackballed should be a leading contender.

Kaepernick recently filed a grievance against the NFL, alleging the 32 owners are colluding to keep him out of the league for kneeling during the U.S. national anthem last year.

His actions have not only created a much-needed dialogue about racial discrimination, but they’ve also touched off a firestorm of critical comments about honouring war veterans while others point to the importance of free speech.

Kaepernick obviously felt compelled to do something to raise the attention about the social injustice African Americans face on a daily basis.

But I wonder if in his heart of hearts, knowing what he knows now, if he would do the same thing again.

Was his demonstration worth it?

Apart from creating a stir and raising the profile of the issues facing the black community, have we seen any real change?

I’m sure we’ll read it all about it in his new book.
