For much of the past week Alberta has been battered by wind and on Tuesday afternoon, another round of wind warnings was issued. The latest warning affects most of central and southern Alberta, including Edmonton and Calgary.

“An intense low pressure system will form in the vicinity of Grande Prairie early Wednesday morning and then track quickly southeastward to lie in southeastern Saskatchewan by 6 p.m. Wednesday,” Environment Canada said on its website on Tuesday.

Strong winds gusts of up to 100 km/h are possible on Wednesday, the weather agency said.

“The winds will begin to surface in north-central Alberta late Wednesday morning and then exit the province near Cypress Hills late Wednesday evening. In addition, strong westerly winds will develop in southwestern Alberta Wednesday morning in advance of the low. Conditions in this area should improve by late afternoon as the winds diminish.”

Global News meteorologist Jesse Beyer said in Edmonton, the expected change in pressure could lead to wind gusts of up to 90 km/h in the city and surrounding areas.

“The cool surge of air will drop temperatures back into the 5 C to 10 C range for Wednesday and Thursday,” Beyer said.

The weather agency issues wind warnings when there’s a “significant risk of damaging winds.” People in areas under a warning were told to be careful while driving in the wind and to be aware that loose objects could be thrown around by the gusts and cause injuries and damage.

Last week, powerful wind gusts derailed trains and helped to spread several wildfires burning in Alberta.
