A Vernon man will have to spend a little more time in prison for killing another man in Polson Park two years ago.
The killing happened in August of 2015 when 42-year-old Jason Hardy, a homeless man, was beaten to death.
A total of three people were charged in connection with the killing but the charges against two of the accused were dropped. One of the accused was only 14 at the time.
The third man pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Tal Kalum La Riviere, 30, was sentenced today to five years in prison, but will only have to serve two years in prison because of time served.
The court heard how Hardy had given La Riviere his bank card to go buy drugs on the day of the killing.
When La Riviere returned, Hardy demanded his bank card.
La Riviere proceeded to beat Hardy but maintains he didn’t mean to kill him.
La Riviere has an extensive criminal record including several assaults.
