‘We’ve had to constantly grow’: Halifax Tool Library finds new home

Three years ago, a group of friends brainstormed the idea of bringing a “tool library” to Halifax.

“Table saws, pressure washers, drill presses, all the big items that you might need for one household project but that you don’t want to spend $500 on,” Caitlin Rockers said, vice-president of the Halifax Tool Library.

The Halifax Tool Library is volunteer run and for an annual fee of $50, members can access endless amounts of donated tools.

“One of the rewards of course is being able to do things on your own and being able to repair the things around you,” Rockers said.

When the initiative first began, volunteers often stored tools in their homes because they didn’t have a big enough space for the library to thrive in.

“We’ve had so many great donations from people throughout the community for tools that we’ve had to constantly grow,” Rockers said.

Now, the tool library has a brand new location — in the basement of the Veith House in Halifax’s north end.

The Veith House is another non-profit organization that serves the community.

“It’s all about improving our community together and supporting each other in doing that,” Rockers said.
