Power outages, toppled trees result of 100 km/h winds in London

Londoners are starting the workweek recovering from Sunday’s gusting winds.

A blustery cold front moved through the region prompting Environment Canada to issue a wind warning. Wind gusts reached  100 km/h.

The wind brought down trees, leading to power outages across the city and damage to homes and property.

One of the largest trees to topple was a maple that fell on a house on Byron Avenue.

“I was sitting in the room facing the tree and I heard the crack from outside so it kind of sounded like something breaking or thunder or something,” homeowner Scott Orme told AM980.

“Right after that, in a split second, the tree came and hit the opposite corner to where I was sitting.”

Orme said it’s too soon to know the extent of the damage, but at the very least he says his roof will need to be replaced. He added that the tree had been on his and his neighbour’s radar for some time.

“We had reached out to the city and let them know that it was struggling. They knew about it and had it in their queue apparently to look at and probably take down but I guess they didn’t get to it in time.”
