In 2009: NDP incumbent Sue Hammell thumped the competition in this riding, defeating Liberal Rani Mangat by over 7000 votes, 73-24%—the NDP’s biggest margin of victory.

History & Geography: Created in 1991, Surrey-Green Timbers is directly south of Whalley, bordered by Scott Road to the west, 144th Street to the east, 96th Avenue to the north, and 80th Avenue to the south (save for a small section that goes down to 75th Avenue on its western end). It has gone to Sue Hammell in every election it has been contested except 2001.

Candidates

Liberals-Amrik Tunk: A doctor, Tung has lived in Surrey since 1991. He teaches medical students at UBC, and is an active member of local Sikh and Hindu temples. He has a medical degree from a university in India, and has worked in New Zealand and Edmonton.

NDP-Sue Hammell: The Deputy House Leader for the NDP, Hammell was first elected in 1991. When the NDP was in government, she served as Minister of Housing and Minister for Women’s Equality, among other positions. Before entering politics, she was a teacher in Quebec, Courtney, and Surrey.

Greens-Richard Hosein: A research associate at Kwantlen University, Hosein is a student activist who has worked with the Langley Environmental Partners Society and Young Greens Canada.

Conservatives-Lisa Maharaj:

Vision-Harjit Heir: Heir is one of four candidates running for the BC Vision Party, which promises a “One Vision, One World” platform based on equality, and is only running in Surrey ridings.
