WATCH: The transition from summer to fall brings higher than normal algae levels to Dorval’s drinking water. An abnormal taste has residents concerned while the borough claims the water is safe for consumption. Global’s Dan Spector reports – Oct 10, 2017

Some Dorval residents are upset because their tap water is coming out with a bad flavour and smell.

“It doesn’t taste good. It’s got kind of a mildewy taste, the drinking water,” said Dorval resident Bill O’Neill.

Another resident, Dick Hamilton, agreed.

“Recently it has a smell and a bit of a taste,” he said.

The city of Dorval says algae in the river is the reason for the issue. It happens every year, but with high temperatures sticking around into the fall, more algae has grown.

“It’s been lingering a bit more because we were fortunate enough to have better days in October, but it’s getting better,” Dorval spokesman Sebastien Gauthier told Global News.

Officials said some algae release molecules that cause the bad taste. Those molecules make it through the water filtration plant and linger in the network.

Despite the taste, the city maintains there is no danger, and the water remains healthy to drink.

“The most important thing is there’s no hazard to health, no concerns on that front. It’s really safe,” Gauthier said.

Improvements are coming to the water filtration plant to try to keep the nasty aroma out.

“We’ve been told they’re trying to work on some filtration system to try to eliminate the taste and the darker colours,” said Gauthier.
