Montreal police arrested a 46-year-old man after an SUV crashed into a church near the corner of Jean Talon and l’Acadie Boulevard in the Town of Mount Royal Monday night.

The incident happened around 10:15 p.m. when a police patrol followed the SUV to run a check on its license plates.

The suspect sped off down l’Acadie Boulevard after he saw the police cruiser following him.

Witnesses saw the SUV crash into a nearby church and helped the pursuing officers locate the crash.

When police arrived at the church, the suspect had fled the scene.

“A canine unit was brought in to locate the suspect,” said Montreal police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant.

Nobody was injured and Montreal police say the suspect, who is known to police, may face charges of vehicular theft and hit-and-run after fleeing the scene of the accident.
