Just two weeks into his 165-day sentence, Adam Kargus was beaten to death in his cell at London’s Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre on October 31, 2013. Kargus, 29, was being held in jail for using stolen IDs to buy cellphones in Sarnia.
His body was found in the jail’s showers. An autopsy concluded that he died from blunt force trauma. Kargus’ cellmate, Anthony George, who has a history of violence, was charged with second-degree murder shortly afterwards.

George originally pleaded not guilty but the court heard he changed his plea after reviewing surveillance footage of the beating. A second-degree murder conviction comes with a life sentence but with a range of when an inmate can be eligible for parole.
Justice Bruce Thomas is set to deliver his sentencing today.
