Thanksgiving is as often described as a time to come together with family and in Calgary, there’s a lot of opportunities to spend hours with your loved ones while you wait for the turkey to be served. Here’s what you need to know as we mark another Thanksgiving off the calendar.
What’s open:
- Village Square and Southland Leisure centres are open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., though the arenas at Village Square are closed. Regular admission applies.
- Richmond Green Golf Course is closed for the season, but other courses are open during the holiday. You can book a tee time on the city’s website.
- You can get in a free swim at the Canyon Meadows Aquatic and Fitness Centre, Killarney and Renfrew Aquatic and Recreation centres or the Shouldice Aquatic Centre from 1 m. to 2:30 p.m., or from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
- The Ernie Starr, Murray Copot, Rose Kohn/ Jimmie Condon and Shouldice arenas are all open from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
- Chinook Centre (11 m.-7 p.m.), Marlborough Mall (12 p.m.-5 p.m.), the Core Shopping Centre (12 p.m.-5 pm.) and Market Mall (11 a.m.-6 p.m.) are open but on reduced hours.
- Calgary Transit operates on a Sunday level of service on Thanksgiving, though downtown CTrain stations are closed for maintenance from over the weekend.
- The Spyhill and Calgary landfills are both open

- North Mount Pleasant and Wildflower Arts centres are closed
- All athletic parks are closed except for advanced bookings
- The Calgary Soccer Centre is shut down for the holiday except for advanced bookings
- All Calgary Public Library branches except for Memorial Park and Village Square are closed on Monday
