Victoria mom convicted of 1st-degree murder for killing 18-month-old daughter

A Victoria woman was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday, right after she was convicted of killing her 18-month-old daughter in September 2015.

The jury rejected a defence of “not criminally responsible due to mental disorder” for Kaela Mehl, who will not be eligible for parole for 25 years.

The case began when police were called to a home in the 1200-block of Vista Heights in Victoria on the morning of Sept. 16, 2015.

Police arrived at the home to find the 18-month-old and tried to revive her, but she died despite their efforts.
