Security is being beefed up at the Peterborough Memorial Centre
Facility manager Jeremy Giles said fans shouldn’t expect any delays when attending the Peterborough Petes’ Ontario Hockey League (OHL) home opener this Thursday but they will see new safety procedures rolled out including bag checks.
“It’s not intrusive at all,” said Giles.
“It’s a very non-invasive process. People will be asked politely to offer their bag for inspection and it’s really just a measure to help protect all of the patrons and fans and staff and everybody who comes out to cheer on the Petes and (Peterborough) Lakers.”
The security measures weren’t mandated by the OHL or Major Series Lacrosse league. Rather, the City of Peterborough wanted to update its emergency and management procedures.
“Fans can expect to have their normal game night, status quo,” said Giles. “Arrive, park, come on in — ticket takers at the door and a quick five-second bag inspection and you are through to your seat.”

It’s all in keeping with OHL standards. The Petes were just one of two franchises among the 20 teams that did not check bags at the door last season. The organization agrees this is for everyone’s safety.
“We’re 100 per cent behind them,” said Petes’ executive business director Burton Lee. “I think we can all agree, having a safer arena facility is a priority for everyone — be it a fan or staff member.”
The Memorial Centre says it will utilize additional staff for Thursday’s game. Giles says body searches will not be a part of the security checks, nor will metal detectors be used, unless posted otherwise.
