The Saskatoon Blades will honour a former captain at the team’s home opener.

Bruce Gordon led the club in the early 1980s before going on to a long career with the Saskatoon Police Service.

After leaving the force, he went back to university to earn his law degree to become a lawyer.

Gordon was recently diagnosed with stage-four pancreatic cancer.

A number of former players will be in attendance to rally around their former captain, along with police officers from Saskatoon and Regina.

“We aim to develop people first and players second so they leave our program more well-rounded citizens than when they arrived,” Blades president Steve Hogle said in a release.

“Bruce is in a class by himself as evidenced by this amazing response. He offers all of us a lesson in how to live life.”

A number of fundraisers will be held during the game for the fight against cancer.

Proceeds from an auction of a Kelly Chase signed jersey, sales of “Be Like Bruce” T-shirts and the 50/50 draw will go to cancer research at Royal University Hospital.

Earlier this year, hundreds of people performed a CrossFit workout to support Gordon’s battle against cancer.

The Blades take on the Swift Current Broncos on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m. CT.
