The Addiction Prevention Centre is distributing 20,000 information brochures around the Greater Montreal area.

They explain how to recognize and respond to an overdose and why recreational drug users are at risk.

In some cases, drugs such as cocaine and synthetics have been laced with the deadly opioid.

“Last week we learned that there were a few cases of overdoses with fentanyl and we thought that was probably the right time to come out with our brochure,” said the Addiction Prevention Centre’s director, Anne Elizabeth Lapointe.

“People are misinformed about what is fentanyl and what to do in case there’s an overdose.”

Fentanyl is an opioid 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine.

Montreal Police recently dismantled two fentanyl drug rings and seized millions of dollars of the powerful drug before it hit the streets.
