Finlay Creek wildfire south of Peachland 100 per cent contained

Almost two weeks after it was first discovered, the Finlay Creek wildfire in the Okanagan is 100 per cent contained.

The fire was reported on Sept. 2 and led to evacuation orders in Summerland and alerts in Peachland.

As of Wednesday morning, there were still 120 firefighters working on the blaze supported by a helicopter and four pieces of equipment but those resources will gradually be moved out of the area.

“We are reducing our resources and demobilizing our fire camp over the next few days,” fire information officer with the B.C. Wildfire Service Heather Rice told Global Okanagan News.

The fire grew to 2, 228 hectares.

Smoke is still visible in the area and is expected to linger for some time.

“We will have a presence on the fire for a while to make sure it stays within the current fireguards,” Rice said.

The B.C. Wildfire Service said firefighters will be monitoring the blaze and putting out hot spots for a couple of weeks.

The fire is still under investigation but there was no lightning in the area at the time it broke out.
