UPDATE: police confirm one person inside the car that went into water at ferry terminal

UPDATE: RCMP confirm that one person was inside a car that went into the water at the Descanso Bay ferry terminal on Gabriola Island this morning based on the surveillance footage they reviewed. Police can’t confirm if there were any passengers. They say the vehicle is sitting 120 feet below the surface. Divers will be on-scene tomorrow morning to start a search for both the vehicle and occupant. 

Service between Gabriola and Nanaimo resumed at 5:30.

A car went into the water early this morning.

BC Ferries says at around 3:45 a.m. this morning, a vehicle drove through a barrier gate at a high rate of speed at the Descanso Bay terminal on Gabriola Island.

The ferry service was not in operation at the time, and the shore side ramp was in a raised position as per usual procedure.

The vehicle launched into the water at a high rate of speed and sunk quickly.

There’s no word on whether or not anyone was inside the vehicle at the time of the sinking.

Gabriola RCMP, Coast Guard hovercraft, fire fighters and ambulance are all on scene.

Water taxi service for foot passengers is operating until service resumes.
