A man has been charged with impaired driving causing death after a fatal crash in Saskatchewan over the Labour Day weekend.

Melfort RCMP said the crash happened early Saturday evening between an eastbound truck on Highway 789 and a southbound car on the Kinistino grid road.

The driver of the car, Quinn Sheremeta, 46, was declared dead at the scene. He was from the Melfort area.

A passenger in the car, a 36-year-old woman, was transported by STARS air ambulance to a Saskatoon hospital with unknown injuries.

Police said the driver of the truck, Troy Tolofson, fled on foot but was caught a short distance from the crash.

He was taken to hospital in Melfort for treatment of his injuries.

Tolofson, 46, who is from the Melfort area, has been charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, failing to remain at the scene of an accident and resisting arrest.

He has made his first court appearance and will be back in Melfort provincial court on Sept. 12.
