It’s a problem thousands of residents in Regina have been putting up with all summer, water main breaks have been happening all over the Queen City.
The city reached a record 112 water main breaks for the month of August, a month that typically only sees about 20.
Most cases saw people without water for less than 24 hours. The breaks were causes by dry conditions causing shifting grounds.

“September is typically our highest month. Our highest in September is 115 and we are anticipating the break season is going to continue,” City of Regina Director of Waterworks Pat Wilson said.
On any given day there could be up to 60 water main leaks in Regina. City crews are able to repair 10 water main breaks daily.
$1.8 million of the $2.8 million allocated for water pipe repairs has already been used, but even if that number continue to creep up it shouldn’t blow the budget.
“We expect to be on target. One thing to bare in mind, is we had a very light beginning of the year. Between January and June we had 28 breaks and another 28 breaks in July,” Wilson said.
