The Conservatives are calling for a probe by the parliamentary ethics committee into the federal and B.C. provincial government’s plan to buy up empty Metro Vancouver condos and either resell them or rent at affordable prices.
Conservative Party of Canada Leader Pierre Poilievre said in a release Sunday that he had written a letter to the chair of the committee. He asked the chair to hold a meeting to launch an investigation into potential conflicts of interest from Prime Minister Mark Carney’s plan.
“Mark Carney is building an economy of carve-outs, bail-outs and hand-outs for the Liberal Club; and higher costs, debt and taxes for everyone else,” Poilievre said in a statement.
The plan, according to Carney and B.C. Premier David Eby, is to boost the supply of affordable housing.
But critics say buying up the unsold condos at market prices is a “bailout” for developers who made bad decisions in the first place.
On Thursday, Carney told reporters that developers did not “directly” ask him to pursue the plan, adding the initiative was also not pursued with the industry in mind.

The prime minister said governments would look to provide about 10 per cent of the “overall dollar value contemplated” for financing the available units, which he estimated at about $1.4 billion.
Poilievre noted Carney’s comments, and in the release questioned if another minister was “lobbied” to introduce the program.
“I’m calling on you to hold an urgent meeting of the Ethics Committee so it can investigate this bailout,” Poilievre said in his letter, posted on X.
The partnership announced Thursday between the two governments includes spending more than $5 billion on B.C. infrastructure, $3.2 billion to lower development charges for multi-unit housing — reducing costs by up to 50 per cent in communities that are deemed a priority — and $284 million to reduce barriers for new construction.
The letter by the Conservative leader is addressed to Conservative MP John Brassard, who chairs the committee.
Such a probe will face a barrier because while Brassard is chair, the Liberal government’s restructuring of the committee following its return to majority status means Liberals hold the most seats. As the chair is not given a vote unless there is a tie, the ethics committee has five Liberal MPs and four Opposition voting members, meaning the government can defeat any Opposition vote if they choose.
Pierre would do that and then some. Ten times worse. Quit pointing fingers.

So in addition to lowering development fees for the developers, now the people of Canada will pay to buy condos for developers that till few years ago were earning close to $800 per sf. The developers calculations did not work out this time, but that’s cost of business. Why are we bailing them. Is Carney going to bail me when I want to sell my condo and it sells under what I purchawhile it for. And I voted liberal. This and other issues such as the help to Ukraine while we struggle here make me wonder if I made a wrong decision.

I don’t understand why government involvement is needed or desirable. The developers of the condos should decide which ones should be sold and which ones should be rented, adjust marketing and pricing accordingly, and try to clear the market i.e. sell or rent the inventory. Government entering as a provider of temporary working capital and then presumably selecting buyers and renters seems unnecessary and problematic.

If you want the price of housing to drop you have let these developers be accountable for their investment.
Paying market for them just keeps the price of housing where it is.
That said, cost of building has gone thru the roof. This to due to a number of things, but in no small part it is also due the additional costs of building units to all these new green and environmental requirements and codes. It’s has added 10s of 100s if not 100s of 1000s of dollars to the final sale price of unit.
Just build them structural safe and waterproof etc and leave all the virtue signalling codes out.

That’s the truth. Their greed and high prices put them in this position, drop the prices significantly and they will sell. My tax dollars should not be paying for the profits and housing costs of other people.
PP could give up his free home for the PM and saved money can go towards homeless shelters or another plan to help with housing. Only Canada houses the opposition party. He can sit in a corner until then and come up with solutions instead of non-stop complaining.
There are two issues here.
Firstly, during an affordability crisis, the federal government should not be intervening to artificially prop up condo prices. That’s bad business and it’s actively going to hurt young Canadians. Of course, it’s good for boomers, and the Liberals know who their base is.
Secondly, why these developers? Are there connections with Brookfield here again? Have the developers been donating to the Liberal party? There are businesses across the country that are failing. Why do these developers get a taxpayer funded safety net while everyone else gets hung out to dry?
