Canada is preparing to send disaster relief supplies, like baby formula and towels, to the tens of thousands of people affected by the Hurricane Harvey aftermath in Texas.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered Canada’s assistance during a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency put in an official request on Friday for several supplies needed for children, such as pediatric hygiene kits, pediatric pillows and towels, baby formula, baby bottles and cribs.
The Government Operations Centre is co-ordinating the logistics of the request and supplies will be coming mainly from Public Health Agency of Canada’s emergency stockpiles, according to Scott Bardsley, press secretary for Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale.
“We want to get the supplies out as soon as possible,” Bardsley said.
Harvey has drenched the Gulf coast in record amounts of rain, forcing around 32,000 people across the region to flee to emergency shelters. At least 39 people have died in flooding or storm-related incidents since last weekend when it hit.
