Carfentanil and fentanyl were just two of the drugs seized in an investigation that involved RCMP west of Edmonton.
Stony Plain/Spruce Grove/Enoch RCMP executed a search warrant on Aug. 25 at a residence in west Edmonton.
Two men were arrested.
Drugs seized from the home include:
- 3.2 kg of MDMA
- 1.4 kg of cocaine
- 702 grams of methamphetamine
- 2.7 grams of powdered fentanyl
- 44 tablets of fentanyl
- 64 tablets of carfentanil
- 1 gram of heroin
- 2 kg of hashish
- 17.5 kg of marijuana
- 423 grams of powdered cannabis concentrate
- 1.1 kg of shatter
- 1.7 kg of psilocybin mushrooms
Police said the amount of fentanyl seized would have been enough to make 2,700 one milligram doses. Cpl. Brad McIntosh with K Division’s Clandestine Lab Enforcement and Response Team stressed that could have had a major impact on a community like Stony Plain.
“If you were to dose that at two milligrams, which is the lethal dose for half the population, that’s 1,350 potential deaths. That’s a significant impact,” he said.
“For a community like Stony Plain and surrounding area, I bet you’re looking at anywhere from five to 10 per cent of your area population that could impact on a day-to-day basis.”

McIntosh estimated the drugs seized had a street value of about $700,000. He called the file “substantial,” for an area like Stony Plain.
“This rivals what you’ve seen from combined forces units that have worked with Edmonton police and Calgary police and other law enforcement units,” he said.
Police also seized approximately $45,000 in cash, a 100 troy ounce silver bar, several one ounce gold coins, two handguns, a conducted energy weapon and a set of brass knuckles.
“This has impacted the group that’s involved here, I would say, greatly,” McIntosh said.
Daniel Gleason, 28, and Kevin Gleason, 22, both from Edmonton, each face drug and weapons charges that include possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of prohibited weapons.
RCMP confirmed the two are brothers and that one has a “very minor police history,” though police did not specify which brother.
“We’ll examine this to see if there are any links to organized crime,” officer in charge of Stony Plain/Spruce Grove/Enoch RCMP Rob Hill said. “Very often you’ll see large drug trafficking operations are part of the business model related to organized crime. Our investigation is continuing; we haven’t made the links yet, but our investigation continues.”
The two have been released from custody on bail and are scheduled to appear in the Provincial Court of Alberta in Edmonton on Sept. 25.
