Vancouver has broken a 50-year-old temperature record and while it’s going to get cooler for the next few days, the hot and record-breaking temperatures are going to return for the weekend.
On Tuesday, Aug. 29, temperatures at the Vancouver Airport reached 29.7 C, breaking the previous record of 28.3 C set in 1967.
A number of other temperature records were also broken on Tuesday:
- Vancouver Harbour 30.5 C (old record 28.9 C in 1967)
- Kamloops 38.5 C (old record 35.6 C in 1915)
- Princeton 36 C (old record 35 C in 1897)
- Sparwood 32.1 C (old record 30.6 C in 1972)
- Williams Lake 31.9 C (old record 31.1 C in 1967)
- Pemberton 35.1 C (old record 34.4 C in 1974)
- Whistler 31.8 C (old record 31.1 C in 1996)

Global BC meteorologist Mark Madryga says after a number of high temperature records were established on Monday and Tuesday, afternoon readings will dip several degrees today and Thursday, but will remain a little above late August averages.
“The high pressure ridge will strengthen again on Friday, putting the southern part of B.C. back into the heat through the upcoming long weekend and into the middle of next week,” he added.
“Record high temperatures are probable again especially by Sunday through Tuesday, including in the Lower Mainland, where highs will reach the mid 20s to a little over 30.”
