Just after 9pm Monday night a collision involving a motorcycle and van took place at the intersection of highway 2 and highway 15 in Kingston – Aug 29, 2017

A 22-year-old Kingston man is in critical condition in hospital following a two-vehicle crash at an east end intersection.

The collision involved his motorcycle and a van and happened just after 9 p.m. Monday night at Highway 15 and Highway 2, said Kingston Police Const. Greg Smith.

“A 36-year-old male from New York State was driving a van going eastbound on Highway 2.  A 22-year-old Kingston area man was driving westbound on Highway 2 — the van attempted to make a left-hand turn to go from eastbound Highway 2 to north bound on Highway 15 and the collision occurred within the intersection,” said Smith.

Police, fire and paramedics arrived on scene shortly after the crash and two ambulances were dispatched. Given the severity of the call and that there were two vehicles involved, the extra resources were needed, said  Deputy Chief with the Frontenac Paramedic Services Chris McBain. Road closures were in place for close to 13 hours.

The Kingston man who was driving the motorcycle remains in hospital with critical injuries.  The driver of the van and passengers were not injured. Kingston Police have charged the driver of the van with “turn not in safety” and issued the man a ticket.

Emergency services say collisions like this one can be common this time of year.

“Summer time is obviously a busier time for motorcycle injury —  just because that’s when they’re out.  We get traumas year round —  it’s not anything that’s specifically seasonal —  the mechanism of injury can be seasonal,” said McBain.

Emergency services are reminding motorists to be mindful of their surroundings and to share the road.
