UPDATE: On Aug. 28, 2017, the Little Free Library appeared to have been returned after it had gone missing in Pleasantview four days earlier.

An Edmonton family is pleading for the return of a small library built outside their house that was stolen.

Mother Laurel said the family, who lives in the Pleasantview neighbourhood, built the library approximately one month ago and it was up for roughly 10 days before it was taken from their property. She first noticed it missing Thursday morning.

“I… went to look outside the window and I noticed instead of the library there, there was a pile of rocks that had been at the back of the library to weigh it down,” she said.

Laurel said the family built the library to give back to their neighbourhood – the idea behind it is people can leave and take books from the library as they wish.

“[My daughters] wanted to build one so we can meet some neighbours and build community and give something to our community. We have avid readers here so they really wanted to share their love of reading and some of their favourite books with the neighbours,” she said.

She said her husband Peter built the little library while her daughters Katherine and Nicole worked on the design and painting.

“We all worked together. We had been to Germany earlier in the summer and planned it to look like a Black Forest house with the hearts and the windows,” she said.

The family said the project was time-consuming and there are currently no plans to build another one if the library is not returned.

“We’re just really hoping to get our library back.”
