Edmonton election 2017: Moe Banga re-elected in Ward 12

Moe Banga has been re-elected as councillor in Ward 12, according to unofficial results Monday night.

Banga was first elected to council in a byelection in February 2016 after the seat was vacated by Amarjeet Sohi.

Here’s a quick look at the candidates running in Ward 12:

Moe Banga

Moe Banga is a former police officer. He was elected to council in a February 2016 byelection that saw 32 candidates run to replace Sohi, who moved on to federal politics. Banga said he understands the importance of finance, planning and budgeting at all levels of government for long-term sustainability.

Nigel Logan

Nigel Logan said he’s built relationships with the people of Ward 12 through his work as constituency manager with the Edmonton-Mill Creek MLA’s office.

Mike Russnak

Mike Russnak has a diploma in business and has managed several building product distributors and wholesale companies in Edmonton and across northern and central Alberta. Russnak said several city projects have not gone as planned for the residents of Ward 12 and they deserve more from elected officials. His priorities include increased responsibility for capital projects, improved traffic safety and improved policing in southeast Edmonton.

Jo-Anne Wright

Jo-Anne Wright is currently employed with the Legislative Assembly Office. Her priorities include affordable housing, investing in transit and infrastructure projects and expanding 211 to connect residents with health, social and government services.

Walter Youb

Walter Youb said he is running for council because he believes it’s time to give back to the community and city that has given him so much. His campaign will focus on bringing transparency and accountability to council. He also supports the reduction of speed limits in residential areas.

In total, 13 people are running for mayor and there are 70 candidates for city council. Twenty people are running to become Edmonton Catholic School Board trustees, while 28 people are running to become Edmonton Public School Board trustees (including one acclamation).

Election day is Monday, Oct. 16.
