A Winnipeg man was arrested Sunday after allegedly assaulting his female partner, kids and attempting to hit a police officer with his car.

Police were called at approximately 1:30 a.m. to reports of an assault at an apartment in the 1000 block of Andrews Street.

“The nature of this assault, it’s domestic in nature. Traditionally we haven’t released a whole lot of details in an attempt not to re-victimize the victim,” Cst. Jay Murray said Wednesday.

“I can say that the assault caused bodily harm was against a female partner, two of the assault charges were against his children.”

Police found the 43-year-old suspect in a locked car behind the apartment building.

Officers tried getting him out of the car but he kept the doors locked. When police attempted to forcibly remove him, he started the vehicle and quickly backed towards an officer who was forced to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.

Police said he then drove off at a “high rate of speed” and crashed into a fenced compound and several parked vehicles near Main Street and Partridge Avenue.

He was taken to hospital in stable condition and later released. Murray said he was lucky to have been released from hospital later that night as it was a “significant accident”. Police believe he was impaired at the time of the incidents and he was known to police for “similar offences”.
