The Alberta government announced Tuesday that Banff will be receiving nearly $1 million in grants to bolster their local transit service.

The money, from the Green Transit Incentives Program (GreenTRIP), is for two projects with the Bow Valley Regional Transit Services Commission.

A grant of more than $666,000 will be used for the installation of 10 bus shelters along the route serviced by Roam – Banff’s public transit system.

In addition, nearly $267,000 will be used to refurbish five Roam buses – three hybrid electric buses used locally in Banff and two bio-diesel buses operating between Banff and Canmore.

Banff-Cochrane MLA Cam Westhead said the funding will help improve public transit within Banff and Canmore.

“As a world-class tourism destination, it’s important that the Banff-Canmore area has an efficient and accessible public transit system to help residents and visitors get around and connect to other communities.”

“Enhancements to regional transit service in the Bow Valley will encourage more residents, commuters and visitors to Roam Banff National Park,” Banff Mayor Karen Sorensen added.
